India is a land of contrasts, where ancient traditions blend seamlessly with modern life, creating a vibrant tapestry of culture, spirituality, and natural beauty. As a health coach and yoga teacher, my journey to India has profoundly transformed my life, and I am passionate about sharing this extraordinary destination with you. Here’s why India should be at the top of your travel list and why our upcoming retreat in Kerala is the perfect opportunity to experience its magic.
The Spiritual Heartbeat of the World
India is often called the birthplace of spirituality, and for good reason. From the serene banks of the Ganges River to the majestic peaks of the Himalayas, the country is dotted with sacred sites and ashrams where seekers from around the world come to meditate, practice yoga, and explore their inner selves. Our retreat in Kerala will immerse you in this spiritual ambiance, starting each day with yoga sessions designed to balance and open your chakras, fostering a deeper connection to yourself and the world around you.
Culinary Delights
As a vegetarian, India is a dream destination because about 40% of the population is also vegetarian. This means even at fast food restaurants, meat is cooked in a different area, and restaurants are often advertised as ‘veg’ and ‘non-veg’. Real Indian food is nothing like what you get at a takeaway here. During my visits, I was lucky enough to learn how to make the food from scratch. In Goa, I fell in love with Malai Kofta—fried potato and cottage cheese balls in a nutty, creamy sauce so a local chef took me into his restaurant kitchen and showed me how to make it. In Varkala, Chef Khan, a highly sought-after chef (and DJ), taught me how to make appam, a traditional South Indian breakfast of thin rice and coconut pancakes served with an egg in the middle. The culinary experiences in India are not just about eating but about connecting with the culture and traditions that make Indian cuisine so special.
A Feast for the Senses
Every corner of India offers a sensory overload that is both exhilarating and humbling. The vibrant colours of saris, the tantalising aromas of spices in bustling markets, and the harmonious sounds of temple bells and chants create an atmosphere that is uniquely Indian. The colours excite me the most. I visited Jaipur, known as ‘The Pink City’, because most of its buildings are painted pink. Kerala, in particular, boasts a coastline of coconut palm-lined beaches and lush greenery. Tropical fruit grows everywhere, making it a haven for bird watchers. The sensory experiences in India are unparalleled, offering a unique and enriching journey.
Healing and Wellness Traditions
India is home to Ayurveda, one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems. It is also known as the ‘Science of Life’ because it teaches us how to live in harmony with nature and looks at the whole person - body, mind and spirit. During our retreat, you’ll have the opportunity to visit an Ayurvedic doctor, learn about your doshas, and experience personalised Ayurvedic treatments. These ancient practices promote balance and wellness, complementing our yoga sessions and personal growth workshops. This holistic approach to health is a cornerstone of the Indian way of life and a highlight of our time in Kerala.
Warm and Welcoming People
People in India are incredibly warm and welcoming. They love sharing their culture with you—whether it's inviting you to try on a sari, come into their homes, or try their food. They are curious and love to chat, often sharing their admiration for things like the NZ Cricket team. Indian hospitality is genuine and generous, and you will often be invited to stop for a chai. Unlike some other places in the world, you don’t feel like someone is trying to rip you off all the time—they just want to chat and ensure you have a good time in their country.
